The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to purchase or use Cialis (tadalafil) as it has been linked to heart attacks and strokes in some cases.
Cialis (tadalafil) is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis.
The FDA warning was based on a study of 1,200 men who took tadalafil for one year. Those who took tadalafil had a 2.4 percent to 15 percent increased risk of stroke. The risk of stroke increased by 1.6 percent among men who took the drug.
The FDA also said the drug may increase the risk of developing a heart attack or heart bypass surgery. The risk of these conditions is higher in people taking tadalafil who are also taking nitrates.
The FDA’s warning is based on data from the National Library of Medicine that shows the drug is associated with a 1.4 percent increased risk of heart attack or stroke in men who take nitrates for chest pain or heart problems.
